To start your journey, catch a direct flight from London to Barcelona or Madrid. I flew from Barcelona (from Heathrow) and then reached Zaragoza by train in just 1 hour and 30 minutes. Zaragoza, the heart of Aragon, is perfectly located between Barcelona (1 hour 40 minutes) and Madrid (1 hour 10 minutes). To clarify, there are a few direct flights to Zaragoza airport, I couldn’t find any seats when booking the trip.
Aragon, one of Spain’s 17 regions, remains a hidden gem. For example, in 2023, Andalusia received nearly 4.4 million visitors, making it one of Spain’s top tourist destinations. In contrast, Aragon attracted significantly fewer tourists, around 1.1 million visitors despite the region having so much to offer. However, this difference provides a quieter and more authentic travel experience. Therefore, Aragon is perfect for those looking to escape the crowds and explore a hidden gem easily reachable from Barcelona or Madrid.

Zaragoza: A Cultural and Historical Haven in the Region of Aragon
Begin your exploration of Aragon Region in Zaragoza, a city of 700,000 inhabitants that brims with cultural and historical significance. I recommend you to book your stay at Hotel Alfonso named after the king who united the kingdoms to create Aragon. This hotel is very well located in the city and will allow you to explore it by foot, in fact here is a list of places you should visit in Zaragoza:
You can’t travel to Zaragoza without visiting this iconic cathedral. After exploring the inside, I strongly suggest you climb to the top of the tower for panoramic views. This cathedral is integral to the Camino de Santiago, where pilgrims thank the Virgin for a safe journey.
Then, after a short walk you will encounter the former Muslim Cathedral of the Savior. On Calle de Sepulcro, you’ll also discover a stunning facade built by craftsmen from Seville in an oriental architectural style.
Here you will discover an archaeological site revealing the remains of a Roman amphitheatre.
Finally, if you are looking for a place to have dinner, head to this emblematic street for some of the best tapas in town, including artichoke croquettes and Jamon.
Adventures to Try When You Explore the Region of Aragon, Spain
Aragon and especially Huesca, is a paradise for adventure seekers. Here are some must-do activities I tried during this trip:
• White Waters Rafting in Gallego River
Experience the thrill of rafting in Aragon’s clear waters. We did this with UR Pirineos and had the BEST time! On top of that, it was my first rafting experience and I can now affirm it will not be my last. To clarify, the activity lasted around 2 hours and provided all the equipment and facilities (wetsuits, socks, helmets, life jackets, changing rooms, showers). Nonetheless, after brief training, we were ready to go! I loved the unique views from the river and how accessible this activity was for adults but also for kids.
At Tirolina Valle De Tena, adrenaline is the motto. With stunning views of the Pyrenees, this zipline is a must-try in Aragon. Watch the video and discover my experience on the zipline.
If you aren’t afraid of heights and want to take your adrenaline to the next level, then you have to try this Giant Swing after the zipline. It’s an unforgettable experience in Aragon. Watch this video to know what to expect when doing the swing.
• 4X4 in Ordesa National Park
Explore Spain’s greenest area with a 4X4 adventure, discovering glacier valleys and the second-highest waterfall in the country. If you’re limited in time, then the 4×4 is the best option to explore the national park’s epic viewpoints. This exploration method is accessible for all family members and physical conditions; additionally, watch this video and thus, discover the National Park through my eyes.
• Canyoning in Sierra de Guara
I experienced dry canyoning with Vertiente Aventura . This 6-hour activity was ideal for exploring Aragon. Although it wasn’t too physically demanding, you need some flexibility and trust in your guide. Initially, you might feel apprehensive about the first rappelling, but once you start, you’ll gain confidence. We ended the activity with lunch by the river, the most relaxing moment of this trip. This village blends rustic charm and natural beauty with traditional stone houses and cobblestone streets. Furthermore, Buesa is perfect for tranquillity and connecting with nature. Additionally, it serves as a fantastic base for hiking, bird watching, and exploring nearby Ordesa National Park.
• Alquézar: A Must-Visit Gem in the Region of Aragon
This medieval village, perched on a limestone ridge overlooking the Vero River, is a captivating destination.
